Meet Pete
“Nobody came to ask me if I was ok, and that was a really shitty realization.”
Loneliness and connection can define our experiences of drug use. In many ways, Pete’s experience of being isolated and hopeless drove his drug use for a long time.
“In a way, I found that my drug addiction was like a passive suicide. I just didn’t care—I had given up.”
But when we connect with others—when we’re part of a community of people who care for us—that can turn our experiences around. Our relationships with other people can help us navigate the ups and downs of life and keep us tied to something real.
“I credit the Overdose Prevention Site with really saving my life—they’re my heroes. It was that shimmering hope that I didn’t have to be alone all those years.”
Above all, being treated with kindness by others is key.
“When you’re going through something as heavy as a drug addiction that you can’t stop, and you don’t see any way out of, there is still love for you. People don’t have to suffer alone.”
